In Episode 2 of the AI Innovations Podcast Series, hosted by John Stamper, Scopic’s Sales Executive Ian Schwikkard joins the conversation to explore the impact of automation in orthodontics and dental care.
This episode highlights how AI can drastically make workflows way more efficient for orthodontic businesses. It can reduce case times, enhance patient outcomes, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Whether you’re in the dental space or simply looking for real-world AI case studies, this conversation is a must-listen.
AI Innovations in Dental: From Manual Case Work to Scalable Automation
One of the most exciting parts of the conversation is Ian’s walkthrough of how Scopic helped an orthodontic client reduce time spent on a single case from 14 minutes to just 3. That’s almost 80%.
“If a technician is working on a single case and they’re spending 14 minutes on one case, we can use AI to do the standard procedures that are quite menial and reduce those 14 minutes down to three minutes. When you start dealing with 4,000 or 5,000 cases a month, you’ve got a heck of a saving.”
AI wasn’t just a buzzword for this client. It became the foundation for scalability, accuracy, and speed. The improvements impacted everyone from technicians to orthodontists and patients alike.
Collaboration at the Core: Aligning Business Needs with Technical Execution
Before Ian joined Scopic’s sales team, he was a project manager working directly with development, QA, and DevOps. That perspective gave him firsthand insight into how collaboration across departments leads to more intuitive solutions.
“We work together. It’s more of a collaborative understanding because [clients] need to teach us what they know for us help them effectively.”
From dental 3D modeling software to annotating occlusal markers with dental imaging software solutions, Ian explains how even small adjustments made a big difference in software performance and end-user experience.
Data is the Real MVP
As Ian shares, building a great AI tool starts with great data. Standardization challenges in the orthodontic space – from incompatible scanners to variable formats – mean the data must be prepped and tested carefully.
“Is the data correct, and can you use it to overcome a challenge for the AI? That’s probably the biggest thing that we’ve had to try and work on over the last year, maybe even two.”
Scopic worked closely with the client to:
- Clean and prepare training data
- Identify repeatable tasks for automation
- Build deep learning models with explainability in mind
The result? We were able to leverage our custom AI development services to create a tool that reduces human error and boosts predictability in patient outcomes.
