The internet requires a method to differentiate between different computers, websites, and routers. IP addresses provide this differentiation and, as such, form an important part of how the internet works.
IP addresses are not random: they are mathematically produced and allocated among the Internet Service Providers (ISP). The process of managing IP addresses can be rather complex and usually calls for sophisticated automation.
